      Personal Injury and Boating

The summer season is in full swing, which means that boating enthusiasts are taking to the water in droves. Unfortunately, we see a significant number of boating-related accidents every year. It is important that you understand what is required of you as an operator, and that you understand the limits on recovery in the event of a boating accident resulting in personal injury. If you’ve been involved in a boating accident, consult with a boating accident lawyer as soon as possible to understand your rights.

      Boating Safety
I grew up sailing, and I absolutely love being on the water. However, I encounter an awful lot of people who are simply not using safe practices. As an operator you need to be aware that you are subject to federal boating safety regulations. There are now minimum age limits for operating power boats about 10 horsepower and personal water craft. In addition, there are mandatory operator competency requirements for operators of power boats as well as minimum safety equipment and operation standards. Transport Canada has introduced the Pleasure Craft Operator Card, as a measure of competency. Life jackets and PFDs are required (in the right size), for each person on board.

It is imperative that operators know the laws, regulations and local rules; particularly surrounding safe speeds and right of way on the water. And finally, as an operator, you must remember that you are subject to criminal code laws concerning dangerous or impaired driving. Drinking and boating do not mix under any circumstances.
