How it Works
With brain injury cases it is imperative to have a neuropsychological assessment conducted by a highly reputable brain injury physician at a leading hospital. The neuropsychological assessment is the compilation of a series of tests designed to map out mental functioning and determine where the problems lie. These test results are then clinically compared to functionality prior to the injury.

Types of Brain Injuries
Subdural Hematoma
A subdural hematoma (SDH) occurs when blood collects between the inner layer of the dura mater and the arachnoid mater of the meringues around the brain. The bleeding is usually a result of tears in the veins that cross over that subdural space. It is most commonly associated with Traumatic Brain Injury. Treatment can range from time and monitoring to surgery.
Subarachnoid Hemorrhage
A subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a type of stroke that can be life-threatening. While it can be caused by a ruptured aneurysm, it can also be caused by a head injury. Survival rates range from 1/3 surviving with a positive recovery, 1/3 will survive with a disability, and 1/3 will die. This is basically bleeding around the brain that is caused by a stroke-like hemorrhage. (Source)
Edema
Edema in its simplest definition is “swelling due to trapped fluid.” When applied to the brain, the damage can range from minor to severe, even causing death. Cerebral edema happens when fluid around the bran builds up and increases pressure against brain matter, also called “intracranial pressure.” While swelling and/or inflammation is a natural bodily response to injury, where the edema happens can cause lasting effects.
Diffuse Axonal Injury (DAI)
In children this is also called “shaken baby syndrome” but this traumatic brain injury can happen at any age. When the brain is shifted abruptly inside the skull and the fibers that hold it in place, called “axons” are sheared off as the brain accelerates and decelerates inside the unforgiving hard bone of the skull. Common in car accidents and assault, this can resolve with time or cause permanent disability and even death.
Symptoms of Traumatic Brain Injury
According to the Mayo Clinic there are many symptoms of Traumatic Brain Injury. Some you might feel right away, some may take time to occur. Because the brain is hidden and symptoms can be delayed or misinterpreted – its important o see a doctor immediately after an injury occurs. If you’ve fallen at a private residence or business and hit your head, been in a car accident, or maybe you were hit while riding your bike – it’s imperative to seek medical attention immediately. Let an experienced Toronto brain injury attorney at Himelfarb Proszanski help you sort out the complicated minefield of medical bills and compensatory damages.
