It’s happened to the best of us – we’re driving smoothly on the highway until we get stuck behind a huge 18-wheeler and we can’t see a thing. Because trucks are often slower, we try to overtake them. But, as a driver, overtaking a large vehicle while having a poor view of what is in front of the vehicle is a perfect recipe for an accident.
Inspired by the situation in Argentina, where two-lane roads are common and traffic accidents are among the leading causes of death, Samsung has tried to find an answer to this problem by creating a “see-through” truck.
Samsung see-through trucks aim to help drivers more safely overtake the truck by allowing them to see what is ahead of the truck.
Four video monitors mounted on the back of a truck or other large vehicles are connected wirelessly to a camera in front and allow the driver to see what is ahead of the truck they wish to pass. This technology is especially helpful on one-lane roads, so the driver can know if there is another car coming towards them before they try to pass. The technology is even operational at night.
If the technology works, many lives can potentially be saved. If the technology does not work, this does not exclude the responsibility of the driver of both the truck and the vehicle that wishes to overtake it.
See-through trucks will not prevent very many injuries if the truck drivers are not paying attention. Truck drivers, like car drivers, can get distracted if they are driving while on their cellphone or tablet. The cause of many accidents is a distracted driver and not the bells and whistles of his or her vehicle.
While this technology is a welcome addition to 18-wheelers, we still encourage all drivers to exercise great care while driving and particularly while overtaking larger vehicles. If you are involved in an accident with a truck or any other vehicle, consult with an accident lawyer to understand your rights.
